Fifteen Years of Creating a World in Miniature
THE STORY
Our annual goal is to create an immersive Crèche that combines architecture, craftsmanship, historical research, storytelling, and theatrical presentation. What begins as a shared creative project grows into a continually evolving environment in which every building, figure, landscape, and vignette contributes to a larger story.
FROM CONSTRUCTION TO CREATION
A look behind the scenes at the 2024 Lorain Historical Society Crèche. This nine-minute film follows the transformation of the display from construction and installation through a walkthrough of the completed environment, offering a glimpse into the scale, craftsmanship, and detail behind the finished Crèche.
THE 2025 CRÈCHE
The 2025 Crèche represents the continuing evolution of a project that has been developed and refined over more than 15 years. Installed at the Lorain Historical Society from October through December 2025, the display brought together architecture, landscape, handcrafted figures, lighting, and carefully composed vignettes to create an immersive interpretation of Bethlehem.
THE PEOPLE
More than 100 figures populate the Crèche, representing the people, occupations, and daily activities of Bethlehem. Each figure is carefully placed within the larger environment, helping create the sense of a living community rather than simply a collection of individual characters.
THE VIGNETTES
Individual scenes bring the larger story to life. A merchant at work, a family gathered together, travelers moving through the streets, or a craftsman practicing his trade—each vignette offers a small glimpse into everyday life and gives visitors another story to discover.
